About the James Beard Public Market

The James Beard Public Market is a nonprofit, year-round public market currently under construction in downtown Portland. Opening in 2027, the Market will be home to more than 35+ permanent small businesses while serving as a community gathering place focused on local food, education, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity.

As part of the Market's mission, the Nutrition for Allprogram expands access to healthy food through nutrition education, cooking demonstrations, community partnerships, and food-as-medicine programming. Working alongside healthcare providers, educators, chefs, and community organizations, the program helps individuals and families build lifelong healthy eating habits while celebrating Oregon's agricultural abundance.

Internship Overview

The James Beard Public Market is seeking a motivated Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, Food Systems, or related student to support the development and implementation of the Nutrition for All program. This internship provides hands-on experience designing community nutrition programming, developing educational resources, supporting public events, and helping build one of the nation's newest public markets.

This position is ideal for students interested in community nutrition, food systems, health promotion, culinary medicine, nonprofit leadership, or public health.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

(Other duties may be assigned.)

Nutrition Education

• Assist in developing nutrition education materials for diverse audiences.

• Research evidence-based nutrition topics and translate them into engaging public resources.

• Support cooking demonstrations, food tastings, and educational workshops.

• Help create recipes, handouts, recipe cards, signage, and digital educational content.

• Assist in developing Food as Medicine educational programming.

Program Development

• Support planning and implementation of the Nutrition for All initiative.

• Assist with curriculum development for community classes and special events.

• Research best practices in food access, nutrition education, and public market programming.

• Help identify opportunities for new partnerships and community engagement.

Community Engagement

• Support outreach activities with community organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and nonprofit partners.

• Assist with Nutrition for All events and James Beard Public Market educational programming.

• Represent the Market in a professional and welcoming manner during community events.

Evaluation & Administrative Support

• Assist with participant surveys and program evaluation.

• Help collect participation data and outcome measures.

• Support grant reporting and documentation.

• Maintain organized program materials and digital resources.

Qualifications

• Current undergraduate or graduate student in Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health, Health   Promotion, Food Systems, Community Health, or a related field.

• Passion for healthy food access, nutrition education, and community wellness.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

• Experience with Canva or graphic design is a plus.

• Interest in cooking, local agriculture, or public markets is encouraged. Preferred Partners & Learning Opportunities

• This is an unpaid internship designed to provide hands-on experience, professional mentorship, and portfolio-building opportunities. Academic credit may be available if coordinated through the intern's college or university.
